Losing teeth is a serious issue. Not only does tooth loss affect your smile, but it also impacts the functions of your mouth. Things like eating and speaking become more difficult. Your digestion and overall nutrition suffer. Tooth loss even impacts the health of your jawbone, causing bone loss that alters your bite. Replacing missing teeth is crucial to restoring your mouth, and your quality of life. Lake Sammamish Family Dentistry can help with dental implants.

A Revolutionary Treatment for Missing Teeth

For years, your options were limited when it came to tooth loss. There was either dentures or a bridge. Today, however, you have another option. Dental implants are a modern treatment for replacing missing teeth. With this treatment, small titanium posts are implanted directly into your jawbone with a surgical procedure. As you heal, your natural bone gradually fuses to the posts, integrating them into the jaw. When you have fully healed, the posts are then used to provide support and stability for ceramic crowns, which replace the visible surfaces of your missing teeth.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants can be used in some different situations. It is a versatile treatment that provides a solution for just about everyone.
•  Single tooth. One post and one crown replace a single tooth.
•  Multiple teeth. Also called an implant supported bridge, this treatment replaces two or more teeth in a row. The number of posts needed depends upon the number of teeth missing and your jawbone.
•  Full arch replacement. Often referred to as an implant supported denture, 6 to 8 posts are used to support an entire arch of replacement teeth.
•  All on 4. This treatment is recommended if you do not have the bone mass needed to support a typical implant supported denture. Rather than undergo a bone graft, four implants are strategically placed to support your new teeth.

What to Expect From Implant Surgery

Dental implants require a surgical procedure. Surgery begins with small incisions in the gums, providing us access to your jawbone. Next, a small drill is used to create holes in the bone, and we place the posts inside. Finally, your gums are sutured closed around the posts, leaving just a small amount exposed above the tissue, and temporary teeth are placed. As you heal your bone gradually fuses to the posts. The total amount of time that it takes for you to heal depends upon several factors, but it generally takes anywhere from several weeks to several months. During this time, several follow up visits will help us to monitor your progress and make sure that you are healing properly. Once you have fully healed, we then take impressions and create your final implant restorations.

Benefits of Implant Surgery

Along with restoring your abilities to eat and speak, dental implants offer numerous other benefits.
•  The crowns look exactly like your natural teeth. There is no telling the difference between the restorations and the real ones.
•  Your teeth are held securely in place. They will not wiggle around or fall out.
•  Because the crowns are supported by the posts, implants are significantly more comfortable.
•  You can brush and floss your implants just like your real teeth.
•  The posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your real teeth. This puts a stop to, and prevents further, bone loss in the jaw.
